How does Cathodic Protection work?

To control corrosion in Chiller water boxes cathodic protection can be installed.  Because of the method by which cathodic protection operates, and provided the system is correctly installed and maintained, no corrosion will occur.

When a cathodic protection system is installed current is discharged from the anode into the water which then flows through the water into the surface of the water box.  This current flow is in the opposite direction to that of the above corrosion current and consequently, provided the anode current flows in sufficient quantity the corrosion reactions are completely halted.

What is Stray Traction Current and Electrolysis.

The railways use DC current to operate their traction system. Some of this Direct current (DC) can flow from rail lines and can cause serious corrosion to underground metallic services and the steel reinforcement of concrete. Stray traction current flowing in the ground can be picked up by the steel reinforcement one side of the development, flow along the reinforcing steel and discharge back to the soil on the opposite side of the building. At the discharge point of the current, corrosion of the reinforcement will occur.
